There are a few pictures from this event available in the “World Cup 2002 Gallery“.

MEN’s TOURNAMENT

The following nations attended the fourth World Cup tournament for men in Szombathely:

  1. Québec
  2. Czech Republic
  3. Italy
  4. Switzerland
  5. Hungary
  6. Poland

In the preliminary round every team played everyone once. The first four teams then went on to play semi-finals where the losers played a match for third and the winners played the final.

As expected the final was to be played between the two antagonists Québec and Czech Republic. The final was a fair game but the talks were focused on the two nations match in the preliminary round where a fight between two players forced the referee to end the game and call it a draw.

In the end the Czech Republic was crowned World Champions after the 25-18 victory in the final.
This was the Czechs’ second title as they also won the first title in 1999.

Third place was claimed by the italians after beating Switzerland in the match for the bronze.

Here is the final standings:

  1. Czech Republic (World Champions)
  2. Québec
  3. Italy
  4. Switzerland
  5. Hungary
  6. Poland

WOMEN’s TOURNAMENT

The following nations attended the second World Cup tournament for women in Szombathely:

  1. Czech Republic
  2. Québec
  3. Hungary
  4. Europe mix

In the preliminary round every team played everyone twice. The two best teams went on to play the final.
Because of the limited number of countries a mixed team from europe was added to the tournament.

Like in the men’s competition the final was to be played between the two expected teams: Czech Republic and Québec.

The preliminary round meeting between the two finalists had been even as they won one game each. Surely a step forward for the Québecians after the huge defeat in Italy the year before.

In the final, however, the Czechs’ showed that they still are the better team winning 23-16 thus claiming the second World Championship title in a row.

Here is the final standings:

  1. Czech Republic (World Champions)
  2. Québec
  3. Europe mix
  4. Hungary
