All games were played at the “Sports Center Slavia” which is the same venue where the World Games was held in 1989, 1995 and 2000.

The host nation, Czech Republic entered the tournament as undisputed favourites in both the men’s and the women’s tournaments. Especially since Canada did not send a team to the men’s tournament.

MEN’s TOURNAMENT

As expected, the Czech men breezed through the preliminary round winning all four matches with an impressive goal difference of 145-48. Behind the Czechs, Italy and France battled for second place where Italy drew the longest straw after winning over France 22-16 in the preliminary round.

Hungary and Slovak Republic were fighting for the valuable fourth place which would mean a place in the semi-finals. The Slovaks were here the stronger team after winning the preliminary round match between the two nations 21-15.

As a “reward” the Slovak Republic was put against their neighbours from Czech Republic in the semi-finals,
a task which would be to big for the Slovaks as the Czechs won 41-7.

In the second semi-final, the two combattants Italy and France was put against each other. Once again the Italians was the stronger team winning the game 28-25.

France won the bronze after a 23-17 victory over the Slovak Republic in the match for 3rd place.

As expected the Czech men was one size bigger than their opponents in the final; Italy.
The match ended 30-11 in favour of the Czechs. This was the second “World Champion” title in a row for the Czech men.

WOMEN’s TOURNAMENT

The women’s tournament was supposed to be a tighter fight between the Czech and Canada.
France and a Hungarian team composed of players from several european countries were the other two teams competing for the medals.

Czech Republic lived up to the great expectations and won all matches in the preliminary round including a
25-19 victory over the biggest rival; Canada. Canada took second place after the preliminary round losing only to the Czechs, followed by Hungary and France.

In the semi-finals Czech Republic was therefore put against the French team and Canada was facing Hungary.

The favourites did not disappoint, Czech Republic won 35-7 and Canada 28-9 leading to the final everyone had expected.

Hungary won the match for bronze against France 33-18.

In the final, Czech Republic proved to be a little better than their opponent. Even though the game was much tigher than when the two teams met in the preliminary round, Canada was unable to surprise and the Czechs won their fourth World Champion title through a 19-17 victory.

FINAL RESULTS:

  1. Czech Republic
  2. Canada
